RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASE CONTROL PROJECTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

As traffic to my site grows, I’m keen to bring awareness to Rural Development and Disease Control Projects in developing countries. By sharing our contacts and knowledge, we can find the expertise and funding to make respectful, enduring and positive change.

At a recent Veterinary Conference, I came across the Global One Health concept which recognises the overlap between human, animal and environmental health, and the importance of that overlap in program implementation. This is true for disease control but also for increasing livestock productivity.

Improving the health of the animals will often improve the health and quality of life for the villagers so it is not as effective  to treat them as separate. The conservative estimate is the Rabies still kills over 55,000 people a year-most of which are children in poor rural villages.  Many rabies cases are not reported or recognised. These deaths are 100% avoidable with the right resources.  Vaccination of 70% of dogs will result in dramatic reductions in rabies cases in the human and wildlife populations.

Do you know of anyone who can help? Can you?

INITIAL PROPOSAL FOR A RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN CAMBODIA

When travelling in Cambodia in 2007, I wondered what could be done to support rural villagers. I developed a Rural Development Project based completely on input from local Government and Village Chiefs. The focus is on the project being completely self sustainable and implementable by the villagers once the project is up and going; and consistent with local needs and resources.

My sources in Cambodia don’t have the resources to help until I have funding; and I don’t want to get funding until I am positive I have a viable and locally sustainable plan. The next step is finding a horticulturist experienced in Asian crop systems, to see what crop may be practical to use. Do you know of anyone? Any input will be greatly appreciated, and productive modifications to the project welcomed. Everything starts small, we can then set up similar projects in other areas. 1. Kia ora,

We are a small family of three who have recently travelled to Europe with our 6 month old. We loved every minute of the sometime stressful experience and are planning our next trip already! But before we go we are hoping to do a van trip around our home country NZ (we currently live in Whangarei) in March 2013. We would love any tips or advice you have on going to Thailand as we are hoping that this is where we end up next.

    Nga mihi,

    Alexandra, David and Nikau.

    • Hi Alexandra, David and Nikau,

Thailand, how fantastic! It depends on your budget, how long you are going for and if there is anything you’d especially like to see. I’ll send you my email address so we can communicate about it 🙂

      Cheers

      Trish
